Kelenföldi Erőmű is one of three power plants belonging to Budapesti Erőmű Zrt., in which natural gas-based heat and electricity production takes place. It supplies heat and hot water to a total of 41,150 homes and 1,800 other users, with a heat output of 321 MW and an electricity output of 177.8 MW.
In connection with the capital's electrification program, electricity production at the Kelenföld Power Plant began in June 1914, i.e. more than 100 years ago.
In the beginning, according to the conditions of the time, steam was produced in low-pressure coal-fired boilers, and two 7.5 MWe turbo generator units supplied the 10 KV electricity. As time progressed and in order to meet the changing needs, the power plant developed continuously. In 2011, the power plant reached the point where the converted gas turbine and modernized boiler combustion equipment are operating with exceptionally good emission characteristics from an environmental protection point of view, because by using these systems they operate with much lower carbon dioxide emissions than their predecessors.
The Kelenföld Power Plant also provides so-called system services in the district heating service, in addition to heat production, such as district heating circulation, pressure maintenance and supplementary water supply. The district heating districts supplied by it are: Őrmező, Gazdagrét, Lágymányosi housing estate, Buda Castle, Ferencváros and Józsefváros.
